Dublin SPCA

The Dublin SPCA is very proud of its shelter on Mount Venus Road, Rathfarnham. Opened in 2003, it is a state of the art facility offering shelter and care to a wide variety of animals including more commonly dogs, cats, horses, donkeys, goats, cows, pigs, rabbits, ferrets, gerbils, budgies, snakes, terripins and all manner of farmyard fowl. The SPCA centre is also a rest stop for a number of injured and young wildlife awaiting release including swans, foxes, badgers and small birds.

The DSPCA is a registered charity, set up to prevent cruelty to animals and is now Ireland’s largest animal welfare organisation.

Apart from fighting animal cruelty the society provides direct care for thousands of animals at their shelter in Rathfarnham for both domestic pets and wildlife and also through their mobile veterinary clinics.

Surprisingly this is a fun place to visit as they house many animals and wildlife in beautiful grounds and its FREE to visit.There is also a cafe in the shelter called the “Central Bark Cafe” and a Pet Supplies Shop. People can sit and relax after visiting the Dublin SPCA centre, meet with Adoption Consultants, buy cat and dog food and other pet accessoriesand they also sell items for adults, kids and the home..

The areas on public view include the stables, paddocks and grazing pastures, the dog kennels, cattery, small animal sections, pig play area, goat and fowl areas. Behind the scene they have isolation facilities housing sick and injured dogs and cats, veterinary inspection units, pre and post operative veterinary wings, two state of the art operating theaters.

School groups, community groups, summer recreation programs and any other interested groups can set up a time for a tour of the Dublin SPCA animal centre which includes introductory video and discussion session in the lecture room followed by a tour of the centre.
